Modified on Tue, 26 Nov at 9:15 AM

The Comment Analysis tool in Analytics Studio puts our AI-powered theme, sentiment, and intent analytics models at your fingertips to help you discover actionable insights from the often vast amount of comment data. You can efficiently analyze your data and apply filters to identify recurring themes in comments and understand the sentiments and intents behind them.

Note: Analytics Studio is available for Administrator and Creator users only.

Note: Depending on purchased features, the Comment Analysis tool may also include Comment Copilot, which leverages the power of OpenAI to summarize key sentiments, victories, challenges, and areas for improvement, helping you to effectively focus your action planning process. For more information see the Use Comment Copilot article.

Comment Analysis Overview

For single survey projects you can use the Comment Analysis tool to quickly discover actionable insights from your comment data.

The upper half of the workspace displays a question dropdown, the themes detected among the comments for the selected question, as well as the sentiment breakdown, intent breakdown, and the top 5 co-occurrence themes.

The All Comments section in the lower half of the workspace displays all the comments received for the selected question, along with the sentiment, intent, and theme associated with each one. You can use the items in the upper half of the screen to select different questions you want to view comments for and to filter the comments in the lower half of the screen

The upper half of the workspace is divided into five sections:

  • Question List: Select the survey question for which you want to view and analyze comment data.

  • Filter by Theme List: View the number of comments and percentage of comments tied to each theme associated with the selected question. Click a theme to filter the comments and other areas of the workspace. You can also view the list as a downloadable wordcloud.

  • Sentiment Breakdown: Displays a breakdown of percentages by sentiment (positive, neutral, negative) for the selected question and any theme you select in the Filter by Theme list. Click a sentiment to apply it as a filter to the comments.

  • Intent Breakdown: Displays a breakdown of percentages by intent (Praise & Approval, Should & Suggest, Wants & Preferences, Needs & Concerns, Angry & Unfair) for the selected question and any theme you select in the Filter by Theme list. Click an intent bar to apply it as a filter to the comments.

  • Top 5 Co-Occurrence Themes: Displays the top 5 co-occurring themes for the selected question and any theme you select in the Filter by Theme list. Click a theme to apply it as a filter to the comments. If you also select a theme from the Filter by Theme list, the comments are filtered to show those that pertain to both themes.

Note: For details about our comment analytics models, see the Perceptyx Comment Analytics Capabilities article.

  1. Display the Select a Question dropdown.

A list of the open-ended questions from the listening event appears.

  1. Select a question.

The themes, sentiment and intent breakdowns, and co-occurring themes for the selected question appear in the upper half of the workspace. All the comments for the selected question appear in the All Comments section (in the lower half of the workspace).

Filter by Theme

When you filter by theme, the Sentiment Breakdown, Intent Breakdown, and Top 5 Co-Occurrence Themes sections update to reflect data associated with the selected theme and the All Comments section updates to show only the comments associated with the selected theme.

In the following example, the first screen capture shows no filters applied.

The second screen capture shows the Learning and Development theme applied. Notice that the Sentiment Breakdown and Intent Breakdown percentages are different, as are the Co-Occurrence Themes. In the All Comments section, the number of comments is reduced from 28,916 to 4,519 and the selected theme displays in the Theme column.

The applied filter displays at the top of the All Comments section. You can remove a filter by clicking (or remove all filters by clicking Reset Filters).

You can also filter by theme using a word cloud. Enabling the Wordcloud toggle switches the theme list to a word cloud in which each word represents a theme.

Hovering over a theme displays the number of comments associated with the theme. Clicking a theme applies it as a filter.

Note: You can filter by one theme at a time. You can dig deeper by applying sentiment, intent, and/or co-occurrence theme filters.

  1. Display the Select a Question dropdown, then select the question for which you want to analyze comments.

  2. In the Filter by Theme list, click the theme by which you want to filter.

All areas of the workspace update to reflect the selected theme.

  1. To filter by theme using a word cloud, enable the Wordcloud toggle in the Filter by Theme section, then click a word in the word cloud to apply the filter.

Note: To download the word cloud, click Download Word Cloud. When the confirmation message appears, click Confirm to download the content as a pdf file to your default download location.

Filter by Sentiment

You can filter comments by sentiment alone or in addition to other filters. Simply click a sentiment in the Sentiment Breakdown section to apply the sentiment as a filter.

The following example shows the Positive sentiment applied in addition to the Learning and Development theme. Notice that the number of comments is further refined to 1,426 and the only sentiment shown is Positive.

  1. Display the Select a Question dropdown, then select the question for which you want to analyze comments.

  2. In the Sentiment Breakdown section, click PositiveNeutral, or Negative.

The All Comments section updates to show comments associated with the selected sentiment. If you have other filters applied, they remain in effect.

Filter by Intent

You can filter comments by intent alone or in addition to other filters. Simply click an intent in the Intent Breakdown section to apply it as a filter.

The following example shows the Praise & Approval intent applied in addition to the Positive sentiment and the Learning and Development Theme. Notice that the number of comments is further refined to 135 and the only intent shown is Praise & Approval.

Note: Some comments have multiple intents associated with them (for example, Shoulds & Suggestions and Needs & Concerns). In such cases, filtering by one intent may still display comments with multiple intents, but they will all include the intent you chose as your filter.

  1. Display the Select a Question dropdown, then select the question for which you want to analyze comments.

  2. In the Intent Breakdown section, click an intent.

The All Comments section updates to show comments associated with the selected intent. If you have other filters applied, they remain in effect.

Filter by Co-Occurence Theme

The Top 5 Co-Occurrence Themes section displays sub themes in the comments related to a specific theme you select. When you select a theme, the comments within it include other themes as well. The themes that appear in this section are the ones that most frequently appear with the selected theme. For example, when comments mention leadership, they also tend to include the communication theme.

The following example shows the Continuous Improvement subtheme applied in addition to the Praise & Approval intent, the Positive sentiment, and the Learning and Development theme. Notice that the number of comments is further refined to 30 and the Theme column includes Continuous Improvement sub themes in addition to the Learning and Development theme.

The addition of sub themes expands the intents included in the Intent column; however, they all include the Praise & Approval intent that is selected as a filter.

  1. Display the Select a Question dropdown, then select the question for which you want to analyze comments.

  2. In the Top 5 Co-Occurrence Themes section, click a sub theme.

The All Comments section updates to show comments associated with the selected sub theme. If you have other filters applied, they remain in effect.

Filter by Demographics

You can also filter all the comment data by one or multiple demographics. For convenience, you can save a filter for later use.
